In October 2007, the Cascade Lake 4-H Camp Board announced the launch of ‘Campaign 2010′.  The goal was to raise funds for current camp improvement needs and to build a reserve to help finish other projects by the end of the year 2010.  The goal was to raise over $200,000 in three years through a combination of grants, corporate support, and individual contributions.

2010 seemed a long time away that October, but here we are already in February. We wanted to take this opportunity to report the success so far of our Campaign.  Many 4-H clubs, individuals, businesses, and camping groups have sent donations.  In 2009, we raised $5,100 with the Casino Night Train Ride and had a lot of fun.  We will be hosting another train ride this year.  Watch for information. Donations from the United Way Campaign added $1,059. Individuals contributed $3,885.  The Idaho Community Foundation awarded the camp $2,500 and the Brandt Foundation awarded us $10,000. Thanks to all this generosity we raised $22,544 in 2009. Considering the economic climate of the last two years, we feel very fortunate to have received this amount from all our “Friends of Camp”.

To date we have raised about $36,863 towards our goal and will work on needed projects this summer. Please continue to check the website at www.cascadelake4hcamp.com for updates about future fundraising events, work weekend projects, and others ways you can help the Cascade Lake 4-H Camp.

United Way Donations

If you are a donor to the United Way Campaign, please continue to direct all or a portion of your yearly contribution to the Camp’s Campaign 2010 goals.  You can simply specify the Cascade Lake 4-H Camp’s 501(c)3 nonprofit number of 82-0262849 on your United Way pledge form.  Many employers match employee donations to the United Way. Please be sure to notify them of your donation.

May Work Weekend

May 15 and 16 have been set for the spring Work Weekend at camp. Interested volunteers are invited to come help with preparation of camp for the 2010 season. 4-H families are encouraged to come check out the camp with their 4 -H’ers, see where they will attend camp and lend a hand in the maintenance of camp.  Cabins will be available for participants Friday and Saturday night.  You must make reservations by May 3 so we have cabins available and know how much food we need to prepare.  We will have meals Saturday and Sunday morning for those volunteering. A list of work projects will be posted on the website in April.  Let us know if you have a specific project you would like to help with.  Unable to attend?  Donations of materials and money are welcome.  Contact Lori at 365-3259 or Kathy at 467-3237 for reservations or further information.  (All youth under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.)

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Cascade Lake 4-H Camp is looking for a person who would like the opportunity to spend the summer working in the beautiful Idaho mountains.

We have an opening for the Head Cook position for the 2010 season. The Head Cook plans menus and supervises kitchen staff. The Head Cook needs to be available by late May thru the first of September.  Knowledge of kitchen skills and use of kitchen equipment is necessary.  Must be certified with Idaho as a food handler. Limited lodging is available and meals are included.

Idaho Community Foundation and Brandt Foundation

The Cascade Lake 4-H Camp has received a grant of $2,500 from the Idaho Community Foundation for capital improvements at the camp to help with ADA accessibility.  We will use the money to help make improvements to the Health Lodge, dock entry, camper cabins and pathways to activities at the camp.  The money is from the Southwestern Region Greatest Need Fund in the ICF.  The ICF is a statewide nonprofit organization composed of over 400 individual funds pooled together for efficient management.

The Brandt Foundation was formed by John & Orah Brandt to support private and public education and other community endeavors. The $10,000 grant from the organization will be used to help with the accessibility improvements at the camp.  Improvements to the pathways will allow campers of all abilities to better use the camp facility. The Camp Board is very appreciative of the donations made by these foundations. The $12,500 will help greatly with work projects scheduled for this summer.

One of the items we need for keeping pathways compacted and firm enough for wheelchairs is a ‘plate compactor’.  A new one is around $1000.  A used one in good condition would do the job.  If you know a company or person that might be getting rid of an old compactor, please let us know their contact information.  We’d also be open to donations to purchase the equipment.

Heard Around the Campfire…

This section is where we usually feature an article submitted by a camper from our camp.  Sadly, this month I do not have an article to publish.  I thought I would use the space to encourage one of you to submit an article for the Fall newsletter.

Some ideas you could write about:  The last article was written by Pastor Ralph Lowe whose church has been camping with us for 45 years.  He wrote about the memorable experiences he had at the camp and how the family camp was a value to their church.

You could tell about an experience you had at the camp.  Did you have an experience with some of the wildlife at the camp?  We’ve had several dens of fox, many deer and osprey at the camp.  Were you at camp the year the wild turkeys were looking for handouts?

How about a fun workshop you experienced at camp? Did you make a good friend you still have?  Did you save part of your lunch from the bus ride to camp and decide to eat it the next day?  Bet you got sick!  How about an interesting canoe ride?  Send it to Kathy at lauerk@heritagewifi.com.

Back in September 2009, Cascade Lake 4-H Camp supporters took a train ride on the Thunder Mountain Line to raise money for Camp. It was a fun evening and we raised $5,100, so we’ll be doing another train ride soon. Stay tuned!

The John H & Orah I Brandt Foundation recently announced their grant distributions. The Brandt Foundation is committed to actively supporting private and public education and other community endeavors. Cascade Lake 4-H Camp has received $10,000 in support of their work to make the District II 4-H Camp accessible to youth of all capabilities. The Camp Board will use funds to improve pathways and buildings. “We appreciate the continued support of the Brandt Foundation Board in helping us with our projects at the camp. The funds will help us with several accessibility projects this summer.” Kathy Lauer, Camp Board President.

Being a 4-H Camp Counselor is one of the most rewarding things you can do as a teenager and will create memories and bonds that will last a lifetime.

Head Cook (OPEN POSITION)

The Head Cook is responsible to the Board of Directors of the Cascade Lake 4-H Camp, Inc., under general supervision of the Camp Manager. Responsibilities include planning and preparing safe, nutritious, economical meals for large camping groups, ordering and maintaining all necessary food and other related supplies, and recruiting, hiring and supervising kitchen help.  Click here for full job description.

The Cascade Lake 4-H Camp will use the grant money to help make accessibility improvements to the Health Lodge, dock entry, camper cabins and pathways to activities at the camp. This will allow campers of all abilities to better use the camp facility.

Since 1965 the Cascade Lake 4-H Camp’s mission has been to provide a safe, comfortable facility at a reasonable price for youth and families of all capabilities to experience the opportunity of healthy recreation in a natural environment. 4-H youth from nine counties in the southwest Idaho district use the facility each summer. The camp also serves school groups, military youth and families, church groups, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, sport groups, family reunions and social groups. The Camp is located in Donnelly, Idaho.

“The monies from the Southwestern Region Greatest Need Fund in the Idaho Community Foundation make it possible to make more of the accessibility improvements needed at the 4-H Camp this summer,” stated Kathy Lauer, Camp Board President. “We really appreciate the Idaho Community Foundations help in making the facility better for all youth attending camps.”

Each $100 donation admits one person to the event.

We’ll be boarding the Thunder Mountain Line in Horseshoe Bend for a 3-hour scenic ride to raise money for the Cascade Lake 4-H Camp. Games, hors d’oerves and soft drinks will be provided. This is not a youth event – must be 21 and over to attend.

The train will board at 5:30 pm at the train station in Horseshoe Bend. The train leaves promptly at 6:00 pm.
